A Caress in Nature
Otters, the Stone, and a Kiss in Perspective
I was strolling along the river in Trondheim on a quiet afternoon, with the city’s pulse faintly present in the background. My gaze fell upon a few otters playing along the water’s edge. They moved with grace and energy, their sleek bodies slipping in and out of the river. This moment later became the inspiration for a watercolor painting. Just above the riverbank stood a large stone, covered in rough moss and weathered by time. At first glance, it almost seemed as if this ancient rock was calmly observing the otters with quiet interest. I decided to capture the moment with a photo. As I moved a few meters to the side for a better angle, something unexpected happened. Suddenly, it looked as though the two nearest otters were standing face to face kissing! It was a fleeting illusion, created by my new perspective. In reality, one otter had been standing about a meter ahead of the other. But from this exact angle, with their faces nearly aligned, it appeared as if they were exchanging a tender greeting. A smile spread across my face. Nature is full of these small, fleeting moments, transformed by our own viewpoint. What had first seemed like a stone observing wildlife became, in the next instant, a kiss between two playful otters. It reminded me how easily our eyes can deceive us, and how different the world can appear from just a slightly altered perspective. I snapped the photo, knowing it wouldn’t capture the illusion itself, but rather the memory of the little story that unfolded by the riverbank in Trondheim the story of the otters, the stone, and a kiss that existed only in my perspective.
